ALEKS GRILZ

Aleks Grilz is a Blue Mountains-raised painter and mural artist based in Melbourne, Australia. A graduate of the National Art School in Sydney, his practice spans large-scale public murals and smaller studio paintings, bringing together elements of science fiction, figurative painting, and street art.

Grilz works with a range of painting techniques, including aerosol, brushes, and rollers mounted on extension poles. This combination allows him to move between the scale of urban walls and more contained works on canvas while maintaining an energetic visual language defined by expressive figures, vivid color, and densely imagined environments.

Character-driven storytelling is central to his work. Human and humanoid figures frequently appear transformed by futuristic devices, mechanical structures, and organic forms, creating speculative worlds where technology and nature intersect. These figures often appear exaggerated, gestural, or physically distorted, becoming vehicles through which Grilz explores identity, adaptation, resilience, and transformation.

Science fiction provides an important framework for these imagined environments. His paintings consider possible futures shaped by technological advancement and environmental instability, often approaching these subjects through satire and dark humor. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, Grilz constructs scenes that encourage viewers to consider humanity’s changing relationship with the systems and environments it creates.

His murals can be found across Melbourne and other parts of Victoria, and his practice remains closely connected to the accessibility and temporary nature of public art. Grilz has participated in projects and events including the Frankston Street Art Festival and has also exhibited studio work in Melbourne galleries. Across walls and canvases, his work continues to develop a speculative visual world in which human, technological, and organic forms continually collide and evolve.
