SALVATOR MONTALTO
Salvator Montalto is a contemporary self-taught artist whose practice moves between sculpture, painting, and installation. After exploring disciplines including design, painting, and writing, he increasingly turned his attention to sculpture, developing a visual language centered on light, shadow, and the selective revelation of form.
Montalto’s sculptural works are primarily created from carved wood and acrylic paint. Rather than treating the entire figure with equal visibility, he uses chiaroscuro as a structural element, sculpting the areas that appear illuminated while allowing other forms to recede into darkness. His works are often placed within deep black frames, intensifying the contrast between visible surfaces and surrounding shadow.
Human figures and fragments frequently emerge from these dark environments: a face, an eye, a gesture, a body in motion. This controlled use of visibility gives his compositions a cinematic quality, with some works drawing on the atmosphere of classic Hollywood and film noir. References to popular culture also appear throughout his practice, alongside influences associated with Impressionism, Surrealism, and Pop Art.
Montalto’s multidisciplinary background extends beyond visual art into writing and storytelling, reflecting a broader interest in imagination and narrative. In his sculptural practice, however, narrative is often reduced to a single gesture or illuminated fragment, allowing the viewer to construct meaning from what is revealed and what remains concealed.
His work has been presented in exhibitions including Télescopages & ravissements at Espace Rosa Bonheur in Fontenay-aux-Roses, France, in 2025, where his sculptures were shown alongside artists working across different approaches to material and imagery. He is also represented by Michels de Champourcin Gallery, which presents his contemporary sculptural and painted works.
